Hello, everyone! The most notable technology in the automobile market these days is self-driving cars. According to the Korea Automobile Research Institute, the self-driving car market in 2020 has already reached $7.1 billion (about 8.42 trillion won) and is expected to exceed $1 trillion (about 1,186 trillion won) by 2035. How far have self-driving cars evolved in the midst of the rapid expansion of the self-driving car market? Today, we will introduce the self-driving stage and outlook from the concept of self-driving cars! concept of self-driving cars

A self-driving car is a car that moves on its own even if the passenger does not drive. Did you know that the concept of self-driving cars has already appeared since the 1990s? In the 1997 movie “Tomorrow Never Dies,” the main character James Bond manipulated a driverless BMW vehicle with his mobile phone, but self-driving was a technology that had been steadily discussed for a long time. Self-driving technology can be divided into six stages, from zero to five, depending on the level of development. Let’s look at the differences between each stage and to what stage the current self-driving technology has developed in the case of self-driving technology installed in BMW vehicles.① No Automation

Stage 0 is a stage where drivers always control all functions such as driving and speed control without self-driving technology, and only basic functions such as lane departure warning and object detection are installed.② Driver Assistance Phase 1 driver support technology works at a level where drivers drive directly into the vehicle but self-driving technology assists the driver. Self-driving technology provides steering and acceleration reduction functions that control part of the speed and direction of the vehicle.

In 2017, BMW tested a 7 Series prototype with three stages of self-driving on the highway. Watch the video below, a 3-step self-driving technology that moves even when the driver is away from the steering wheel!⑤ Step 4 Full Automated Driving Step 4 goes further from Step 3 to reach the level of driving without driver intervention in special environments such as road construction sites. Drivers can intervene if necessary, but if they do not, they can spend leisure time such as rest and sleep.Source: BMW GroupThe BMW Group presents a prototype of the BMW 7 Series with a Level 4 self-driving system at the Next Gen (#NEXTGen) event in 2019. Unlike the third stage, it is noticeable that a car with an empty driver’s seat runs on its own. Check out the video below to see how passengers conveniently call their cars with their smartphones and use their driving time as their leisure time!⑥ Full AutomationSource: BMW GroupUnlike steps 3 and 4, the fifth stage of self-driving is a technology that does not necessarily require steering wheels, pedals, or drivers. Passengers can board without any intervention in driving, so they don’t need a driver’s license or a driver’s seat. Pros and Prospects of Self-Driving Vehicles in the FutureSo far, we have learned about the current situation and expected effects from the concept of self-driving cars. I was able to experience the rapid evolution of self-driving technology, which had been a hot topic for a long time. It is also worth noting that self-driving cars are becoming personal spaces beyond simple means of transportation. I’ll wrap up today’s post, hoping to see a self-driving car on the road someday.I’m Kim Jisoo from BMW Korea Future Foundation University Student Team.
